First, flip over a cushion and find the fabric care label. It’s usually tucked underneath or along a seam. Read it properly. “Spot clean only” means you can’t dunk the whole cover in the washer, which is a nuisance if you’ve got kids. “Professional cleaning recommended” translates to an extra cost every few years. If the instructions seem vague or absent, ask for a written guide. You don’t want to discover a fabric can’t handle a simple wipe-down after a spill.
Next, ask for the warranty document and scan it for the humidity clause. Many warranties cover frame and stitching but explicitly exclude damage from moisture or mould. In our climate, where humidity can sit around 80%+, that’s a critical line. A premium sofa should have a warranty that acknowledges local conditions, not one that voids coverage because of “environmental factors”. Get it confirmed in writing before you leave.
Finally, sit down for a full fifteen minutes. Don’t perch—settle into your actual weekend posture. Lean back, slouch a little, maybe prop your feet up if that’s your habit. Does the seat depth support your thighs properly after five minutes? Does the backrest feel too upright or too reclined? That initial “comfy” impression often fades; you need to feel how it holds up. It’s the only way to know if you’ll be shifting constantly to find a sweet spot.
Skip these steps only if you’re truly prepared for the consequences. A fabric you can’t clean, a warranty that won’t cover mould, or a seat that becomes uncomfortable after ten minutes—these aren’t small oversights.
